At The Green's Farm

We went to visit the Green's farm which is at Felton, just south of Toowoomba in Queensland.

As Year 2 are studying farms and cities this term, Zeke has found out lots of information about farms.  2D have sent through questions and Zeke interviewed the Green Family using the class questions as well as some of his own.  The questions are answered directly and indirectly throughout "The Farm" pages in the blog.

<Zeke>
The farmers are:
Andrew, Vicki, Sam (in blue, nearly 12), Tom(in Red, 8) and Jack (in Green, 10).  Andrew's nickname is Greenie.

Mum and Vicki went to school together and we have been to their farm before.  They are famous farmers I think because they were in the paper the weekend that we were there.

What does the farm look like?
This is a picture of the farm with the farmhouse up on the hill (and our caravan out the side)

This is the back of the house

And their outside toilet - called a dunny :)

This is out the side where we parked our caravan.
You can also see the silos where they store grain.

Is the grass long at a farm?
The grass has been mowed so it is not long.

This is me on the big slide.

And with their 2 cats, Flake and Marley.

This is one of the sheds for the machinery

This is another part of the farm where we did harvesting.

What size is the farm?
350 hectares = 3,500,000 square metres which is about 700 football or soccer fields.

What jobs do you do on the farm?

Vicki is an Agricultural Scientist, which means she knows lots about the crops and the animals and Greenie is an Agricultural Engineer so he knows lots about the farm equipment.

Everyone helps with all the farm jobs.  The boys even do jobs like harvesting on weekends.
Farms run by the weather, so everyone works whenever it is needed, weekdays, weekends, whatever.

This is Greenie welding.  He is making a new attachment for the tractor.

What do you normally eat on the farm?
Food from the supermarket just the same as in the city but we don't buy meat from the shops - it comes from the farm animals.

We had pizza, lasagne, curry and BBQ while we were at the farm, which is just the same as at home.

What else is different to the city?
  • There is no rubbish collection
  • The water comes from a bore, not from mains
  • We are very dependent on rain so we work when needed (weekends and all) and not in an office.
  • Water is precious so showers are very very short
  • The boys all do jobs like mustering cattle, feeding pigs and harvesting after school or on weekends.  They also help with the cooking.
  • There is no dishwasher!
  • It is an hour to drive to soccer on a Saturday
  • The neighbours are a long way away
  • No-one locks their house in the country

Last year Tom wrote a story about farming - it goes like this:

Farming
Chop chop goes the axe cutting down a big tree for an outside fire.
Vroom, vroom goes the truck picking up the hay bales.
Bash Bash hay, cotton-seed and grain in the mixer.
Sway sway goes the crop in a strong wind.
Run run go the sheep to the crop for their lunch.
Crunch crunch goes the cotton-seed when the cows eat it.
Slurp slurp goes Dad drinking beer at the end of a hard days work!

We had an awesome time at the Green's farm.  Thank-you!
